What Are the Common App Prompts?

The Common Application (Common App) is a platform used by over 1,000 colleges and universities across the U.S. and abroad. As part of the application, students must submit a personal essay, choosing from a set of prompts.

The essay is your chance to reveal who you are beyond your grades, test scores, and extracurriculars. Schools want to know: What matters to you? How do you think? What have you experienced and learned?

Official Common App Prompts for 2025-2026

Here are the seven prompts for this cycle. You’ll choose one:

1. Background, identity, interest, or talent

“Some students have a background, identity, interest, or talent that is so meaningful they believe their application would be incomplete without it. If this sounds like you, then please share your story.”

2. Obstacle or challenge

“The lessons we take from obstacles we encounter can be fundamental to later success. Recount a time when you faced a challenge, setback, or failure. How did it affect you, and what did you learn from the experience?”

3. Questioned or challenged a belief

“Reflect on a time when you questioned or challenged a belief or idea. What prompted your thinking? What was the outcome?”

4. Gratitude moment

“Reflect on something that someone has done for you that made you happy or thankful in a surprising way. How has this gratitude affected or motivated you?”

5. Personal growth

“Discuss an accomplishment, event, or realization that sparked a period of personal growth and a new understanding of yourself or others.”

6. Passion or curiosity

“Describe a topic, idea, or concept that you find so engaging that it makes you lose all track of time. Why does it captivate you? What or who do you turn to when you want to learn more?”

7. Open topic

“Share an essay on any topic of your choice. It can be one you've already written, one that responds to a different prompt, or one of your own design.”

What’s New This Year?

  • No changes to the prompts

The seven prompts remain the same as last cycle.

  • “Challenges & Circumstances” optional question

You can also respond to a separate, optional prompt about any significant life circumstances (personal, academic, family-related) that may have impacted your education.

  • Character limit updates

Some optional sections like “Additional Information” have new word limits this year. Make sure to review the 2025-2026 application form carefully.

How to Choose the Best Prompt for You

Not sure which one to pick? Here’s how to decide:

1. Reflect First, Choose Later

Think about what you want to share: a story, moment, or value that shaped you. Pick the prompt that best fits that story—not the other way around.

2. Stay Authentic

Admissions officers want to hear your voice, not what you think they want. Choose the prompt that feels natural and lets your authentic voice shine.

3. Think About What You’ll Learn

Your essay should show growth, reflection, and personality. Which prompt will help you demonstrate that best?

4. Make a Rough Draft for Two Prompts

Try writing for two prompts and compare them. Which one flows better? Which essay shows more of you?

Tips to Write a Standout Common App Essay

  1. Tell a Story: Use specific scenes and moments. Help the reader feel what you felt.
  2. Reflect Deeply: Go beyond the “what happened.” Focus on why it matters and how you’ve changed.
  3. Keep It Personal: Write in your voice. Avoid clichés or language that sounds like a resume.
  4. Stay Within the Word Limit: The essay should be 250–650 words. Aim for 600–650 words to maximize space without rambling.
  5. Get Feedback: Ask someone you trust—like a counselor or teacher—to read your essay for clarity and voice.

FAQs About the Common App Prompts

1. How many prompts are there?

There are 7 official prompts to choose from.

2. Can I change my essay after submitting to one school?

Yes! You can tailor your essay for different schools—just do it before submitting to each one.

3. Is one prompt “better” than the others?

No. All prompts are equal—your story and how you tell it matters more than the prompt you choose.

4. Can I reuse my essay from another class or contest?

Yes, especially for Prompt 7, but make sure it fits the tone and purpose of the college application.

5. What if I haven’t had a dramatic experience?

You don’t need drama. Small moments that reveal your personality, growth, or values are just as powerful.

6. Can I answer more than one prompt?

No. The personal essay allows you to pick one prompt only.

7. When should I start writing my essay?

As early as possible—ideally in the summer before senior year.

8. What is the “Challenges & Circumstances” question?

It’s a separate section where you can share how personal or academic obstacles have impacted your high school experience.

Final Thoughts

The Common App essay is your chance to be more than your GPA or test scores. Each prompt is an opportunity to show who you are, what matters to you, and how you think. Whether you write about identity, curiosity, growth, or gratitude, the best essay will always be the one that’s honest and real.

Start early, write with heart, and edit with care. You’ve got this.
